Key takeaways
- Acrylic adhesive stays clear, does not yellow, and holds from freezer to hot trailer: the default for parcels.
- 1.7 mil seals cartons under about 30 lb; 2.0 mil for heavier, restacked or thin recycled boxes.
- Per carton: $0.044 for 2×110 yd hand rolls, $0.035 on 1,000-yd machine rolls, $0.066 for 55-yd rolls.
Acrylic packing tape is carton sealing tape with a water-based acrylic adhesive on a polypropylene film. It is the default for e-commerce parcels because it stays clear, does not yellow in storage, and holds across a wide temperature range. By the case it costs about $0.035 to $0.07 per carton, depending on roll length and whether you run it by hand or on a machine.

What makes acrylic tape different from hot melt?
The adhesive. Acrylic is UV-stable and quiet to unwind, and it keeps its bond from a freezer to a hot trailer. Hot melt (synthetic rubber) grabs faster and harder, which is why it wins on heavy cases and dusty recycled corrugate, but it softens in heat and yellows over time. Our acrylic vs. hot melt comparison goes row by row. For most parcel operations shipping cartons under about 30 lb, acrylic is the right call.
1.7 mil or 2.0 mil?
Mil is the total thickness of film plus adhesive. 1.7 mil acrylic seals standard cartons under roughly 30 lb and is the economy choice for high-volume parcel lines. 2.0 mil adds backing strength for heavier cartons, restacked boxes and thin recycled corrugate; on our store the 2.0 mil hand rolls are the Super Seal line and the machine rolls are 2.0 mil acrylic. The full mil thickness guide covers the heavier industrial grades.
Clear or tan acrylic tape?
Same adhesive, different film color. Clear shows the carton print and barcodes through the tape and looks cleaner on a branded box. Tan blends into kraft corrugate and makes a re-taped carton obvious, which some operations prefer for tamper evidence. Both come in 2-inch and 3-inch widths at the same price.
What acrylic packing tape costs per carton
Store prices for acrylic and machine tape, with the per-carton figure based on a six-strip seal (about 38 cartons per 110-yard hand roll, about 400 per 1,000-yard machine roll):
| Tape | Case | Case price | Per roll | Per carton |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 in × 55 yd clear or tan acrylic, 1.7 mil | 36 rolls | $44.99 | $1.25 | $0.066 |
| 2 in × 110 yd clear or tan acrylic, 1.7 mil | 36 rolls | $59.99 | $1.67 | $0.044 |
| 3 in × 110 yd clear or tan acrylic, 1.7 mil | 24 rolls | $64.99 | $2.71 | $0.071 |
| 2 in × 110 yd Super Seal, 2.0 mil | 36 rolls | $69.99 | $1.94 | $0.051 |
| 2 in × 1,000 yd clear machine tape, 2.0 mil | 6 rolls | $84.99 | $14.17 | $0.035 |
| 3 in × 1,000 yd clear machine tape, 2.0 mil | 4 rolls | $79.99 | $20.00 | $0.050 |
Two things stand out. A 110-yard roll costs a third less per carton than a 55-yard roll of the same tape, because you pay for the core and the changeover either way. And machine tape, at $0.035 per carton, is the cheapest acrylic you can buy, which is why operations past about 200 cartons a day move to a tape head or case sealer.
How many cartons does a roll of acrylic tape seal?
About 38 standard 12×12×12 cartons per 110-yard roll with a six-strip seal (top and bottom center seams plus four edge strips). A 36-roll case seals about 1,400 cartons. If you only run a single center strip top and bottom, you get roughly three times that.

FAQ
Is acrylic packing tape good for shipping? Yes. The acrylic hand rolls and 2.0 mil machine rolls on the ProntoPack store meet postal regulations for shipping tape, and acrylic adhesive holds across the temperature swings a parcel sees in transit.
What is the difference between clear and tan packing tape? Only the film color. Clear shows print and barcodes through the tape; tan matches kraft cartons and makes re-taping visible. Price and adhesive are the same.
How much does acrylic packing tape cost? On the ProntoPack store, $59.99 for a case of 36 rolls of 2 in × 110 yd 1.7 mil acrylic ($1.67 per roll, about $0.044 per carton) and $84.99 for six 1,000-yard machine rolls ($0.035 per carton).
Does acrylic tape work in cold storage? Yes. Acrylic adhesive keeps its bond from freezer temperatures to a hot trailer, which is one reason it is preferred over hot melt for mixed-climate shipping.
