Every carton leaves on a strip of tape, and most buyers pick theirs by habit. The acrylic-vs-hot-melt choice actually has a clean answer once you know what each adhesive is good at.
The short version
Acrylic packaging tape is the right default for e-commerce parcels: it's quieter off the roll, doesn't yellow, holds its grip for years in storage, and handles temperature swings — the carton that sits in a hot trailer in August and a cold van in January. Hot melt tape grips harder and faster, which matters on heavy cartons and dusty recycled corrugate, but it's louder, ages faster, and softens in heat.

Thickness: 1.7 vs 2.0 mil
For cartons under ~30 lb, 1.7 mil acrylic seals reliably with a standard H-pattern. Step up to 2.0 mil when cartons run heavy, get restacked repeatedly, or use thin recycled board that flexes at the seams — the thicker film bridges flex instead of popping.
Count cost per carton, not per roll
A 110-yd roll seals roughly 40–45 standard cartons. Price tape as cents per sealed carton and short 55-yd rolls usually lose to 110-yd rolls case-priced — and if you run a case sealer, machine-length rolls beat both.
