Suffocation warning labels vs pre-printed bags: ProntoPack packaging guide

Suffocation Warning Labels vs. Pre-Printed Bags: Which Is Cheaper for FBA Prep?

Key takeaways

  • Amazon accepts the warning printed on the bag or on a securely attached label; an insert card does not count.
  • Pre-printed bags cost $0.022 (4×6) to $0.22 (19×24) per bag by the case, with the warning included.
  • Labeling adds a step per unit: at 4 seconds each, 10,000 units is about 11 labor hours.

Both pass Amazon's check: the suffocation warning can be printed on the poly bag or on a label securely attached to it. The difference is labor. A pre-printed bag is compliant the moment it is sealed; a plain bag needs a label applied to every unit, and at prep volume that step costs more than the bag.

Comparison: a plain poly bag plus a suffocation warning label, which adds a labeling step per unit, versus a pre-printed suffocation warning bag at $0.022 to $0.22 each with the warning included

What does Amazon actually require?

Any poly bag with an opening of 5 inches or more (measured flat) must carry a suffocation warning that is legible on the outside of the packed unit. The warning can be printed on the film or on an attached label. An insert card inside the bag does not count. The bag also has to be transparent, fully sealed, and at least 1.5 mil thick, and the warning font scales with bag size (10 pt for small bags up to 24 pt for bags 60 inches or more, length plus width). Our FBA suffocation warning bag guide walks through the full rule.

The wording sellers use most is the standard one: "WARNING: To avoid danger of suffocation, keep this plastic bag away from babies and children. Do not use this bag in cribs, beds, carriages or play pens. This bag is not a toy." Confirm the current text in Seller Central before you order a print run.

When do suffocation warning labels make sense?

Labels win when you already own the bags. If you have cases of plain poly bags, or you bag odd sizes that no one pre-prints, a roll of warning labels turns inventory you already paid for into compliant prep. They also suit very low volume: a few dozen units a week, where the extra step costs minutes, not hours.

The trade-offs are real, though. Every label is a touch: pick it, place it, press it. Labels can lift at the corners in a hot trailer or peel on a textured bag, and a missing or illegible label is exactly what gets a shipment flagged at the fulfillment center.

When do pre-printed suffocation warning bags win?

At any steady volume, the printed bag is cheaper because the warning costs nothing extra per unit. Our suffocation warning bags ship pre-printed in three languages, clear 1.5 mil film with a permanent self-seal strip, in 4×6 through 19×24. Case prices on the store work out like this:

Bag size Case Case price Per bag
4 × 6 in 2,000 $44.99 $0.022
6 × 9 in 2,000 $59.99 $0.030
8 × 10 in 1,500 $69.99 $0.047
10 × 13 in 1,000 $64.99 $0.065
12 × 15 in 1,000 $84.99 $0.085
14 × 20 in 500 $57.99 $0.116
19 × 24 in 250 $54.99 $0.220

Pallet and truckload tiers run about 9% to 20% off list on the wholesale line sheet, and a pallet holds roughly 60,000 FBA bags.

The labor math most prep centers skip

Say a packer applies a label in 4 seconds. On 10,000 units that is about 11 labor hours before anyone has sealed a bag. At 50,000 units a month it is roughly 55 hours a month spent on a step a printed bag removes entirely. Even if the label itself were free, the time is not.

»
Rule of thumb: under a few hundred units a month, use labels on the bags you have. Past that, switch to pre-printed bags and stop paying for the step.

Can you use both?

Yes. Many prep centers stock printed bags in their three or four core sizes and keep a roll of labels for the odd item that needs a size they do not stock. If you need labels alongside your bag program, we supply roll labels through our manufacturing network; send the size, material and roll count on a volume quote.

FAQ

Are suffocation warning labels accepted by Amazon FBA? Yes. Amazon accepts the warning printed on the bag or on a label securely attached to the outside of the bag, as long as it is legible on the packed unit. An insert inside the bag does not satisfy the rule.

What does a pre-printed suffocation warning bag cost? On the ProntoPack store, $0.022 per bag for 4×6 (2,000 per case, $44.99) up to $0.22 per bag for 19×24 (250 per case, $54.99). The warning is printed on the film, so there is no per-unit labeling step.

What size poly bag needs a suffocation warning? Any bag with an opening of 5 inches or more, measured flat. Smaller bags do not need the warning, but most FBA prep sizes are well above 5 inches.

Do suffocation warning bags need to be a certain thickness? Yes. Amazon requires at least 1.5 mil. ProntoPack FBA bags are 1.5 mil clear poly with a permanent self-seal strip.
