Buying Packaging Factory-Direct vs. From a Distributor: What Actually Changes
Share
Most U.S. businesses buy packaging third-hand: a factory makes it, an importer lands it, a distributor catalogs it, and each step adds margin. Buying from the manufacturer collapses that chain. Here's what genuinely changes — and what doesn't.
Where the markup layers live
By the time a poly mailer reaches a national catalog, it typically carries importer margin, distributor margin, and the catalog's convenience premium — often 40–100% over factory-direct pricing at equal volume. That's not villainy; it pays for warehouses, catalogs and one-box-of-everything convenience. The question is whether you still need to pay for it.
What changes when you go direct
- Price: the obvious one — you buy at a tier distributors buy near.
- Customization: the factory can run your size, film and print spec; a distributor sells what's on the shelf.
- Supply visibility: you hear about capacity and lead times from the source, not a stockout email.
What to check before switching
- U.S. inventory. Factory-direct with a 6-week ocean lead time isn't direct, it's importing with extra steps. (Our production is in Tijuana — truckload distance, not container distance — and in-stock ships from U.S. inventory in 1–3 business days.)
- Published pricing. A manufacturer confident in its numbers publishes them. Ours are on the line sheet.
- Breadth honesty. Nobody manufactures everything. We make our poly and bubble mailers; lines like tape and paper mailers come from our U.S. manufacturing partners — and we say which is which.
When a distributor is still right
Tiny volumes across many categories, same-day local delivery needs, or one-invoice procurement rules. If that's you today, buy the fast-moving SKUs direct and leave the long tail with the catalog — hybrid beats dogma.
FAQ
What does factory-direct packaging mean? You buy from the company that runs the production lines instead of through importers and distributors — fewer hands in the chain, published pricing, and the distributor margin stays with you.
Is factory-direct cheaper than a catalog distributor? At case quantities the gap is modest; at pallet and truckload volumes factory-direct typically saves double-digit percentages because no reseller layer is stacked on top.
What is the catch with buying factory-direct? Higher minimums than a catalog distributor and fewer one-off SKUs — it pays off once you order your core sizes by the pallet.
