Bubble mailers use a numbering system — #000, #0, #1, up to #7 — that tells you nothing until someone explains it. Order the wrong number and your product rattles around or won't fit. Here's exactly what each size measures and how to choose.

The bubble mailer size chart

Sizes refer to the usable interior (width × length), not the outer dimension. The industry-standard sizes:

  • #000 — 4 × 8 in — jewelry, SIM cards, small parts
  • #0 — 6 × 10 in — cosmetics, phone cases, patches
  • #1 — 7.25 × 12 in — small books, sunglasses
  • #2 — 8.5 × 12 in — apparel, paperbacks
  • #3 — 8.5 × 14.5 in — larger apparel, folders
  • #4 — 9.5 × 14.5 in — hardcovers, small electronics
  • #5 — 10.5 × 16 in — shoeboxes (slim), tablets
  • #6 — 12.5 × 19 in — larger boxed goods
  • #7 — 14.25 × 20 in — the biggest standard mailer

How to pick the right size

Measure your product flat (width and length), then add about ½–1 inch of clearance so it slides in without forcing the seal. If your item is thick or rigid, size up — the padded walls need room to wrap. When you're between two numbers, the smaller one usually protects better (less movement) and costs less.

Standardize to 2–3 sizes and save

The single biggest way to lower your mailer cost isn't finding a cheaper price — it's carrying fewer sizes at higher volume. Most sellers can cover 90% of their orders with two or three sizes (say a #0, a #2, and a #5). Buying those by the case or pallet beats stocking a dozen odd sizes at low volume each.

Kraft vs. poly bubble

Two constructions: kraft bubble mailers (paper outer, recyclable, classic look) and poly bubble mailers (plastic outer, water-resistant, lighter). Same sizing either way — pick based on whether you value recyclability or moisture protection.
